Cancer Patients Need Caregivers To Become Cancer Survivors

I have never enjoyed visiting people in the hospital. Or even in their home when they were sick. That's not a good thing for an ordained minister.
When I was the pastor of a church, visiting the sick was not my most enjoyable task. However, it is something we all should do, even if it is not the most enjoyable
activity. The following suggestions should help you be the supportive person for your loved one or even a casual friend who has been diagnosed with
cancer. Your first fear is, "What shall I say?" You actually don't have to say anything. Or at least not very much. Your first job is to listen. This is difficult when
you are with someone you care about who is facing a life-threatening illness. It is imperative to listen without offering unrealistic expectations. Miracles do
happen. I am one of them. No one, not even my doctors expected me to live. I felt so hopeless that I called hospice in. The only bright spots in my day were the visits
of my friends and family. I think those visits were as much a factor in my recovery as the chemotherapy treatments, my surgeries and the 38 radiation treatments I
endured. Most of my visitors refrained from telling me how good I looked and promising me that I would be my "old self" in no time. Yeah right. With tubes up
my nose and extending from my arm I resented what I perceived as false hope. I am not saying that you should not provide words of encouragements and hope. Just
be careful not to promise things your loved one my not have the capacity to believe right now. It is common human behavior to say "Oh, you're going to be
just fine". Just sitting with someone who is sick and not feeling very hopeful can be the most significant contribution that you will make to your loved one's
well-being. Stay in touch. Cancer treatment and recovery can be a long drawn out process. Cancer patients often think that "people don't call or visit any
more" Checking in regularly over the long haul is tremendously helpful. I don't think cancer survivors can become cancer survivors if it were not for loving caregivers

31 sec - Aug 31, 2008Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the cells of the breast in men and women.[1] Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer (10.4% of all cancer incidence, both sexes counted)[2] and the fifth most common cause of cancer death.[3] Worldwide, breast cancer is by far the most common cancer amongst women, with an incidence rate more than twice that of colorectal cancer and cervical cancer and about three times that of lung cancer. However breast cancer mortality worldwide is just 25% greater than that of lung cancer in women.[2] In 2005, breast cancer caused 502,000 deaths worldwide (7% of cancer deaths; almost 1% of all deaths).[3] The number of cases worldwide has significantly increased since the 1970s, a phenomenon partly blamed on modern lifestyles in the Western world.[4][5] The incidence of breast cancer varies greatly around the world, being lower in less-developed countries and greatest in the more-developed countries. In the twelve world regions, the annual age-standardized incidence rates per 100,000 women are as follows: in Eastern Asia, 18; South Central Asia, 22; sub-Saharan Africa, 22; South-Eastern Asia, 26; North Africa and Western Asia, 28; South and Central America, 42; Eastern Europe, 49; Southern Europe, 56; Northern Europe, 73; Oceania, 74; Western Europe, 78; and in North America, 90.[6] Women in the United States have the highest incidence rates of breast cancer in the world; 141 among white women and 122 among African American women.[7][8] Among women in the US, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second-most common cause of cancer death (after lung cancer).[8] Women in the US have a 1 in 8 (12.5%) lifetime chance of developing invasive breast cancer and a 1 in 35 (3%) chance of breast cancer causing their death.[8] In 2007, breast cancer was expected to cause 40,910 deaths in the US (7% of cancer deaths; almost 2% of all deaths).[9] In the US, both incidence and death rates for breast cancer have been declining in the last few years in Native Americans and Alaskan Natives.[10][9] Nevertheless, a US study conducted in 2005 by the Society for Women's Health Research indicated that breast cancer remains the most feared disease,[11] even though heart disease is a much more common cause of death among women.[12] Because the breast is composed of identical tissues in males and females, breast cancer also occurs in males.[13][14] Incidences of breast cancer in men are approximately 100 times less common than in women, but men with breast cancer are considered to have the same statistical survival rates as women.Pathology - A pathologist will categorize each tumor based on its histological (microscopic anatomy) appearance and other criteria. The most common pathologic types of breast cancer are invasive ductal carcinoma, malignant cancer in the breast's ducts, and invasive lobular carcinoma, malignant cancer in the breast's lobules.Grade of tumor - The histological grade of a tumor is determined by a pathologist under a microscope. A well-differentiated (low grade) tumor resembles normal tissue. A poorly differentiated (high grade) tumor is composed of disorganized cells and, therefore, does not look like normal tissue. Moderately differentiated (intermediate grade) tumors are somewhere in between.Protein & gene expression status - Currently, all breast cancers should be tested for expression, or detectable effect, of the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and HER2/neu proteins. These tests are usually done by immunohistochemistry and are presented in a pathologist's report. The profile of expression of a given tumor helps predict its prognosis, or outlook, and helps an oncologist choose the most appropriate treatment. More genes and/or proteins may be tested in the future.Stage of a tumor - The currently accepted staging scheme for breast cancer is the TNM classification.There are five tumor classification values (Tis, T1, T2, T3 or T4) which depend on the presence or absence of invasive cancer, the dimensions of the invasive cancer, and the presence or absence of invasion outside of the breast (e.g. to the skin of the breast, to the muscle or to the rib cage underneath)The first symptom, or subjective sign, of breast cancer is typically a lump that feels different than the surrounding breast tissue. According to the Merck Manual, greater than 80% of breast cancer cases are discovered as a lump by the woman herself.[18] According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the first medical sign, or objective indication of breast cancer as detected by a physician, is discovered by mammogram.[9] Lumps found in lymph nodes located in the armpits[18] and/or collarbone[citation needed] can also indicate breast cancer. 3 min - Aug 23, 2008Dame Gracie Fields (1898-1979), ne Grace Stansfield, was an English/Italian singer and comedienne who became one of the greatest stars of cinema and music hall. She made her first stage appearance as a child in 1905. Her professional debut in variety took place at the Rochdale Hippodrome theatre in 1910 and she soon gave up her job in the local cotton mill. She met comedian Archie Pitt and they began working together. Pitt would come to serve as her manager and the two married in 1923. Their first revue in 1915 was called "Yes I think so" and the two continued to tour Britain together until 1922. Fields came to major public notice when Mr. Tower of London came to the West End. Her career rapidly accelerated from this point with straight dramatic performances and the beginning of a recording career. One of her most successful productions was at the Alhambra Theatre in 1925; the play toured for ten years. She made the first of ten appearances in Royal Variety Performances in 1928, gaining a devoted following with a mixture of self-deprecating jokes, comic songs and monologues, as well as cheerful "depression-era" songs. Her most famous song, which became her theme, "Sally," was worked into the title of her first cinema film, Sally in Our Alley (1931), which was a major box office hit. She went on to make several films initially in Britain and later in the United States The late 1930s saw her popularity peak and she was given many honors. In 1939, she became seriously ill with cervical cancer. World War II was declared whilst she was recovering and Fields traveled to France to entertain the troops. In 1940, she married film director Monty Banks, following her divorce from Pitt. However, because Banks remained an Italian citizen and would have been interned in the United Kingdom, she was forced to leave Britain for North America during the war. Although she continued to spend much of her time entertaining troops and otherwise supporting the war effort outside Britain, this led to a fall-off in her popularity at home, where she was portrayed by the press as a traitor and deserter. Nevertheless, she performed many times for Allied troops, traveling as far as the islands of New Guinea. After the war, Fields continued her career on a less active basis. She began performing in Britain again in 1948 and starred at the 1951 Festival of Britain celebrations. She proved popular once more, though never regaining the status she enjoyed in the 1930s. She continued recording, but made no more films, moving more towards light classical music as popular tastes changed. Monty Banks died in 1950. Fields married Boris Alperovici two years later. After that, she began to work even less, but still sold out theatres even into her seventies. In 1978, she opened the Gracie Fields Theatre in Rochdale, Lancashire. Her final appearance was at the Royal Variety Show at the age of 80. This superb recording, featuring a hit from the 1929 film "Sunny Side Up", was made for HMV on November 29th, 1929.
